Paris Baguette Expands Reducing Single-Use Plastic Knives Campaign to All Stores

– As part of ESG management, the company began on February 17 to provide disposable plastic knives to customers only at their request at all direct-operating and franchise stores

– It will expand the campaign to all products that used to enclose disposable knives in their packages like roll cakes, in addition to regular cakes, ‘leading eco-friendly culture in the industry’

Paris Baguette, a bakery brand of SPC Group, announced on February 17, 2022 that it started to expand the ‘campaign of reducing disposable knives’ to all stores as part of its environment, social and governance (ESG) management.

Since the end of last year, Paris Baguette has been conducting the campaign of providing disposable plastic knives to cake-purchasing customers only at their request at its directly managed stores on a pilot basis. As it earned a great response from both customers and store owners, the company decided to expand the campaign to all direct-operating and franchise stores of over 3,400.

Also, the company will expand the campaign to all products that used to enclose disposable knives in their packages, such as roll cakes, pound cakes and pies, in addition to regular cakes.

Paris Baguette expects to reduce the use of plastic by over 110 tons annually (equivalent to 50% of disposable plastic knives used annually on average) through the campaign.

The campaign is more meaningful in that it is an eco-friendly move initiated by consumers. In November last year, a part of consumers conducted the ‘Bread-Knife Out Campaign’ over SNS in which they collected and sent disposable knives enclosed in cake boxes to customer centers. In response to this move, Paris Baguette decided to introduce the ‘campaign of reducing disposable knives’ to all of its affiliated stores across the country after sufficiently discussing with franchise stores.
“We decided to carry out the campaign in cooperation with franchise stores to lead the expansion of eco-friendly culture in the industry,” said a manager at Paris Baguette. “We will engage in various ESG management activities tailored to circumstances of bakery and franchise industries.”
