SPC Pack and Lotte Chemical to Cooperate on Low-Carbon and Eco-Friendly Packaging

May 12, 2021 – On May 12, SPC Group announced that its packaging subsidiary, SPC Pack, and Lotte Chemical signed a memorandum of understanding partnership agreement on low-carbon and eco-friendly packaging.
Through this agreement, SPC Pack – the producer of food packaging materials used by Paris Baguette, Baskin Robbins, and SPC Samlip – and Lotte Chemical – the largest bio-based PET producer in Korea – will jointly develop an eco-friendly packaging material using their respective expertise and market strength.
The new agreement will allow development of a new bio-based PET packaging container using sugar cane as raw ingredient. 100% recyclable, the new packaging will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 28% in comparison to the petroleum-based PET in the course of manufacturing, transport, and incineration. Lotte Chemical has already obtained the environmental product certificate from Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Environment, in March 2021. SPC Pack was awarded for reduction of carbon emission in its entire manufacturing process from raw material production to distribution and disposal.
Based on its cooperation with Lotte Chemical, SPC Pack will lead the eco-friendly packaging trend by producing container beverage cups and salad containers with the new packaging.
“SPC Pack, as part of its commitment on environmental, social and governance, is partnering with Lotte Chemical to reduce carbon emissions,” said SPC Pack CEO Chang-dae Kim. “We will continue our research and development on consumer-friendly packaging materials to produce a whole range of eco-friendly packaging with the bio-based PET.”
Meanwhile, Lotte Chemical Basic Materials Division CEO Jin-goo Hwang said, “We will expand our product portfolio of eco-friendly products to meet consumer needs and market trend.” The company also announced its plans to actively cooperate with SPC Pack.
In recent years, SPC Pack has been accelerating its eco-friendly management in packaging. The company signed an agreement with SK Global Chemical and SKC to jointly develop eco-friendly packaging. In 2020, SPC Pack became the first company in the food packaging material printing industry to win three national green technology certifications.
