Onions from Muan, Jellanam-do boasts its high quality as they grow at a fertile land with a sea breeze. You can feel a sense of assurance by just looking at them. The onions grown with the farmers’ blood, sweat, and tears, however, are now facing a critical danger. A continued decline in a consumption trend due to COVID-19 led to a plummeting price while imbalance in supply and demand has worsened. SPC Group has once again rolled up its sleeves to assist Muan onion farmers for the two consecutive years.

Revitalizing Muan onion consumption – leave it to SPC Group!

Paris Baguette’s Muan Onion Bread, launched through Happiness and Shared Growth project with Muan onion farmers
This is the second time that SPG Group and Muan onion farmers have held hands together. Last June, SPG group signed a shared growth agreement with Muan onion farmers to revitalize onion consumption to address a severe drop in onion prices. In recent days, Muan onion farmers have seen a 70% decline in onion prices due to a drastic decrease in onion consumption. To make matters worse, an imbalance between supply and demand deteriorated as the harvest season approaches. This year, SPC Group again decided to purchase a large amount of Muan onions to launch new products and help boost onion consumption.

Jung Seung-yong, deputy manager at the southwestern Jeollanam-do’s vegetable oversight and purchase office, National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, said that “farmers are still facing numerous difficulties including the last year’s harvests still stacked up at the warehouse due to COVID-19, which lasted for the last three years.” Mr. Jung added that “We are very grateful that SPG Group introduced a new product by using Muan onions as its main ingredient.” Shall we now look at the new Muan Onion Bread that SPG Group launched through Paris Baguette?
Full of flavor! Introducing 6 types of Muan Onion Bread

6 types of Muan onion breads by using Muan onions
Through this year’s Happiness and Shared Growth project, SPG Group launched 6 types of ‘Muan Onion Breads’ at Paris Baguette. Muan onion is characterized by its crunchy texture and a strong scent as it grew in a fertile land filled with nutrients added by a sea breeze. Onion Flower Blossom catches the eye with its resemblance to sturdy Muan onions. This menu comes with four different toppings and plenty of crunchy onions to boast rich flavor and taste. Onion Cheese Bread harmoniously combines the deep flavor of grilled onions with soft cheese.
Onion Full of Cheese adds onion and bacon toppings on top of soft breads so that people of all ages can enjoy its deliciousness. Sausage Soft France added juicy sausage and crunchy onions on top of crispy baguette. For those looking for quick, easy-to-cook breads, we recommend Whole Sausage Bread as it can replace a meal with a full sausage covered with soft breads added with moist onion toppings. Chewy Pizza Bread is also popular among children as it tops tomato sauce, onions, and cheese on a chewy dough.
SPG Group’s effort to assist Muan onion farmers

Result from the last year’s Happiness and Shared Growth project with Muan onion farmers
Last June, ESG Happiness and Shared Growth project first took place with Muan onion farmers. The project received overwhelmingly positive responses and achieved several meaningful results. 4 types of Muan onion breads that were launched last year helped Muan onion farmers tremendously in overcoming crises with over 6 million in sales. SPG Group promised to purchase over 600 tons of Muan onions per year to assist farmers struggling from securing sales channels.
SPG Group didn’t stop in simply purchasing the onions. As a part of its effort to truly carry out the value of shared growth, the Group took a lead in assisting neighbors in need. With Nonghyup last August, the Group donated 100K Muan onion breads of 4 types to the underprivileged and volunteers for COVID-19 prevention activities. Donation took place through 202 NH Bank branches across the nation. Furthermore, a portion of sales proceeds for Muan onion breads were donated as a scholarship for students in Muan, Jeollanam-do.
In addition to Muan onion farmers, the Group actively carried out Happiness and Shared Growth projects with farms across the country. In February of last year and this year, the Group showcased new products using strawberries through Happiness and Shared Growth projects with Nonsan strawberry farmers. Last August, the Group launched Paris Baguette’s Chuseok gift through Happiness and Shared Growth projects with Poongi Ginseng farmers. As you can see, SPC Group’s efforts to assist farmers suffering from COVID-19 have continued steadily.
