SPC Launches Safety Management Committee, Former Yonsei University President JEONG Kap-Young Appointed as Chairman

– JEONG Kap-Young, who spearheaded organizational reforms and innovations for government organizations and enterprises, appointed as chairman

SPC announced on the 14th that it has launched the Safety Management Committee to strengthen safety management according to the follow-up measure for the latest accident at the SPC-affiliated SPL factory, and appointed former Yonsei University President Jeong Ka-young as the committee chairman.

 

The Safety Management Committee will assume the role of supervisor and advisor for various matters related to occupational safety, labor environment, and social responsibility in the worksites of all SPC affiliates. To this end, SPC has established a policy to guarantee the independence of the committee’s activities.

 
SPC organized the Safety Management Committee with four outside members and one from within in order to secure the independence and objectivity of the organization. In addition, it enhanced the execution power of the committee by separately setting up the Safety Management Secretariat consisting of working-level officials in each field.

 

Former Yonsei University President JEONG Kap-Young, who was appointed as the chairman, has served as the Chairman of the Audit and Inspection Innovation Committee of the Board of Audit and Inspection of Korea (BAI) and the Prosecutors’ Office Development Committee of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office. Currently, Jeong is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Korean Air. He is an expert who has led external advisory bodies in spearheading innovation and overhaul of government organizations, judiciary, and enterprises. While serving as the Chairman of the Audit and Inspection Innovation Committee, especially, Jeong established a foundation for the eradication of irrational practices and system improvement by being the first outside leader of the BAI’s supervisory organization since the board’s foundation.

 

In addition, Professor Cheon Yeong-wu of environmental and safety convergence engineering at Inha University, former Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office Commissioner Jo Hyeon-wuk, and former Korean Women Lawyers Association President Jo Hyeon-wuk were named as the committee members.

 
Professor Cheon Yeong-wu is an industrial safety expert who has served for over ten years at the Major Accident Prevention Bureau of Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, and former Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office Commissioner Jeong Ji-won, an expert in the field of labor affairs, has dedicated to resolving labor issues in industrial sites and improving labor-management cooperation for almost 30 years at the Ministry of Employment and Labor. Lawyer Jo Hyeon-wuk, who has previously served as a judge, will provide advice in the fields of corporate social responsibility and workers’ human rights improvement, tapping her experiences as a non-standing member of the National Human Rights Commission and president of the Korean Women Lawyers Association.

 

“We launched the Safety Management Committee with members holding expertise in various fields including Chairman JEONG Kap-Young who had promoted changes and innovations for a number of organizations,” said an SPC official. “We will establish the new framework for safety management by carefully listening to the Safety Management Committee and reflecting its opinions in an active manner.
 

SPC is conducting a company-wide safety inspection through four external agencies certified by the Ministry of Employment and Labor according to the “Safety Management Improvement Plan” announced on the 21st. As soon as the ongoing inspection is completed at the end of November, the company will release its safety improvement plan through the Safety Management Committee.
